Community Standards

Our Mission and Vision:

This free, community Switchboard is brought to you by the Good Meat Project, a 501c3 nonprofit, whose mission is to build pathways to responsible meat production and consumption. We envision a thoughtful, conscientious culture of meat consumption that supports an ecologically sound, economically viable system of meat production with the capacity to improve our environment, as well as the lives of animals and the people who produce and eat them for food.

Our Approach:

We are committed to building pathways for consumers, farmers, chefs, butchers and other food professionals to bring good, clean, fair meat to the table in their own communities. Through education, research, and advocacy, the GMP promotes food sovereignty, builds good meat coalitions, empowers change makers, and inspires healthy food systems. We hope that all members of our Good Meat Project Switchboard will join us in virtually signing on to our Good Meat Manifesto.

Our Good Meat Manifesto:

*We insist on an honest approach to meat.

*We lead the conversation about good meat.

*We honor artisanal and cultural traditions that support good meat.

*We facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills that support good meat.

*We cultivate a diverse, inclusive network of good meat ambassadors who are advocates for change.

Our Audience :

We develop and offer educational, networking, and advocacy opportunities for eaters (consumers), seeders (farmers/ranchers), and feeders (chefs, butchers, and other food professionals) in regions across the country. In order to build strong, local, good meat coalitions, we bring urban and rural populations from all economic, religious, political, and ethnic backgrounds together to learn about diverse, responsible meat practices.  This Switchboard is meant to serve and represent the audiences we outline above.

What's This Switchboard All About?

Our Switchboard is meant to serve simultaneously as a marketplace, an information exchange, a networking hub, a virtual mutual aid network, and so much more. If you are a farmer or rancher who raises meat responsibly, you are welcome to advertise any product you are in a position to legally sell. Farmers and ranchers should also feel free to post questions to each other and ask for or swap advice. If you're a consumer you might come here to look for good meat farmers to buy from, ask for everyone's favorite bacon recipe, or swap opinions about home sausage making equipment. If you are a processor who has available slaughter and meat cutting services, feel free to post here. If you are in the culinary industry and want to post job announcements for meat cutters or interns or managers, feel free! If you are a lawyer and you want to become a butcher, tell us about it here and maybe someone will take you under their wing. The sky is the limit. We create our own community together.

Our Switchboard Rules:

A Switchboard exists to meet the needs of the community and serve its members through exchanges around asks and offers. All Switchboard members agree to honor the mission of Switchboard and adhere to the following community standards.

We Are Respectful and Kind.  Switchboard is about having positive human interactions on the internet. We distinguish ourselves from other online gathering places by emphasizing humanity, generosity, and optimism. Posts, comments, and messages should be civil, kind, and generous.

Behavior on and off Switchboard should be positive and respectful. We do not tolerate trolling, attacks, insults, abuse, or bullying of any kind. This content will be removed from Switchboard. (If you have experienced any of the above, please contact your steward immediately.)

We Are Here With Purpose. We’re here because we have a job to do. We want to band together to do something great as a community. We seek action, collaboration, and success. Posts are actionable. They make a clear call to action that is either a request or an offer. Comments and messages are constructive. They contribute to the purpose of the original ask or offer. If content is not actionable or constructive and does not serve the mission of the Switchboard, it will be removed.

"Is this content right for switchboard?"

If you are wondering if your content is appropriate for Switchboard, ask the following questions:

1. Is my contribution actionable and productive?

2. Is my tone civil, friendly, and warm?

3. Am I treating people the way I want to be treated?

"How do these standards help the community?"

A Switchboard is built to be helpful, productive, and optimistic. When community members misuse or abuse the space it can quickly become unhelpful, unproductive, and negative. It becomes a place nobody wants to be. The Switchboard stewards we’ve partnered with are incredible community builders who have invested a tremendous amount of time creating this place where people’s lives are improved. While we want you to feel ownership of this space, we also want you to recognize that it’s a privilege to be here. Switchboard is an awesome collaboration of helpful people. Welcome!
